I can say +/- 1" is plenty accurate enough and do it with a chainsaw drunk. You're going on about "engineering precision", If I'm the engineer, I decide what the precision is. You're going on about how its 10k for a 3d printer is somehow more achievable than a tormach, or, a used Bridgeport clone. What do you want? you're going on about how. Meanwhile, Our friend aluminum over here cuts like butter, supports bearings and is 2 orders of magnitude stronger. And its still just made of plastic, and not even good plastic because layer bonding is a horror show and halves your theoretical strength at BEST. CNCs, EDM, laser sintering, bla bla bla are all also amazing but compare apples to oranges or rather wrenches to, I dunno, saw blades, especially when one is $1k and the other is $50k, doesn't make any sense either. These days they are an essential tool for any real shop. You can get really reasonable shop-level accuracy with really high levels of repeatability on several sub $10k 3D printers on the market right now. Also the learning curve is much higher and the tooling way more expensive. CNCs are absolutely amazing but the cheapest CNC out there that's not a 2.5 axis mill is about starts around $6k but the full package is more like $16k plus it needs pretty significant build out. You can get a used or china brand mill or lathe in the few thousand dollar range but stock is significantly more expensive and the build-out requirements are also much greater but they are absolutely essential tools that no shop would be complete without and that AM will never replace. I think there's a few other really decent accurate printers on the market too in that price range. MakerBot Method does amazing at accuracy and is like $5k.

The full on F350 I think is around $30k, which is far cheaper than most CNCs out there. Stuff that would be a massive massive pain in the ass, take serious time, and cost much more than a printer for a stock alone.įYI the base model F123 printer is I believe around $10k, a far cry from $200k. I can't tell you how many times I've printed out a fixture or jig or a little piece to help with setup, machining, one off test apparatus etc.
